Our annual ISO surveillance audit is scheduled for this month, and preparation is already underway across the organization. While audits are periodic events, they are also an opportunity to confirm something much more important: that the systems, processes, and controls our customers rely on are working as intended.
As part of our ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certifications, we undergo annual third-party audits to verify the effectiveness of our Quality Management System. This year’s audit is a Year 2 Surveillance Audit rather than a full three-year recertification audit, but our approach remains the same: audit readiness is the result of consistent execution throughout the year.
Preparation Reveals the Strength of the System
In the weeks leading up to the audit, managers and process owners review procedures, records, training documentation, and quality data to ensure they are complete, accurate, current, and aligned with how work is actually performed.
A successful audit outcome is not created during preparation; it reveals the strength of the systems already in place and provides independent verification of our commitment to quality, compliance, and continuous improvement.
Training Matters
One point that is crucial to every auditor is a company’s training compliance. Quality systems are only as effective as the people who operate them, so auditors look for evidence that employees have the knowledge, skills, and qualifications needed to perform their responsibilities effectively.
Completing assigned training, maintaining accurate records, and documenting certifications remain priorities throughout the year. Strong training records demonstrate more than compliance; they reflect competence, consistency, and operational excellence.
Every Employee Contributes
Although the auditor will speak directly with only a small number of employees, they will review records and activities from across the organization. Every team and every role contributes to the effectiveness of our Quality Management System.
For example, if the auditor wants to speak to any given employee, the Quality team will work with them beforehand, so they know what to expect. All employees are assigned an ISO Awareness Training at hire, and then once a year, every year, as a refresher. This course outlines audit responsibilities, explains the process, and highlights what auditors are looking for and why.
Audit Readiness Is a Reflection of Our Culture
At its core, audit preparation is not about passing an audit. It is about maintaining a culture of quality excellence and compliance through up-to-date training and accurate records – a culture where processes are followed consistently and accountability is clear.
The upcoming audit gives us an opportunity to showcase the systems we’ve built together. While preparation efforts intensify in the weeks leading up to the audit, true audit readiness comes from documenting work accurately, completing training, following established processes, and focusing on continuous improvement every day.
When those fundamentals are in place, the audit becomes what it should be: not a test of our organization, but a demonstration of its strength. It provides independent confirmation that our systems are working effectively and reinforces the confidence our customers place in us every day.
